This autumn, we are revisiting a program SVC presented several years ago. “The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass” is a 35-minute piece comprised of 12 parts and follows the traditional structure for a Mass; taking a very familiar thematic structure and setting it in a fresh and communal way. It’s a joyful affirmation of life expressed in sophisticated choral sound and jubilant bluegrass harmonies. Composer Carol Barnett has been hailed as a writer of audacious and engaging music. The piece comprises parts for solos, choir, bluegrass band, and then movements that bring the choir and the band together.
This contemporary reimagining had its world premiere with the award-winning Monroe Crossing in 2007. The SVC presented this work in the fall of 2010 at the Weis Center for the Performing Arts and soon became an audience favorite. There were over 580 attendees for the Sunday afternoon concert. Our subscribers, singers and audience members have asked us repeatedly if we could perform this piece again.
Monroe Crossing is a popular bluegrass band from the Twin Cities. Named in honor of Bill Monroe, “The Father of Bluegrass,” Monroe Crossing sings around a single microphone in a style reminiscent of old-time radio shows. The band presents an artistry of world-class musicianship and choreography and plays more than 130 shows a year at major venues across the country. This event will include a set of classic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel and heartfelt originals performed by Monroe Crossing, in addition to a collection of other Appalachia inspired songs sung by the SVC.
As many of us know, Rusty Rail has become a very popular destination in our area. Known for their craft beer, casual atmosphere within some impressive architecture, and a hotspot for the local music scene, this seemed like the perfect venue for Bluegrass program. The business also provides shuttle service from their spacious parking with appropriate handicap access.
Please join us for a “HAPPY HALF HOUR” preconcert reception, featuring a cash bar with all your favorite brews, beginning at 6:30 on Saturday evening and 2:00 on Sunday afternoon.
Cheers!
